Personal Growth & Learning

As a teacher, I believe it is my responsibilty to continually grow and learn as a teacher to better instruct my students and bring them some of the most up-to-date information and innovating activities, equipment and technology in physical education.

CMSPEW%20logoOver the past four summers, I have gotten the opportunity to attend the California Middle School Physical Education Workshop (CMSPEW) @ Cal State Fullerton. This workshop holds sessions by honored state and national P.E. teachers of the year and is attended by many teachers around California & the country; considered to be the best workshop in the state. As of July '08 I have had the pleasure of serving on the organzing committee as well as presenting along side my fellow colleagues.

In March '07 through '09 I had the pleasure of attending the California Assoication of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD) Conference in Sacramento, Riverside, and Santa Clara. I truly enjoyed catching up with old friends and colleagues, but also learning new things, which I believe will make a great fit into all of my classes. While in Riverside, I presented two sessions that got great positive comments from my fellow colleagues.

In the future, my hope is to present again at the CAHPERD Conference as well as my continued attendance to the workshop in Fullerton and attend the national conference for the American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) for the first time. All of these are great organizations for teachers like myself that are excited about learning and sharing new experiences that will benefit children.

Lastly, I hope to start a professional devleopment session surrounding elementary school physical education for all of the primary teachers within the Saratoga Union School District. I believe this to be vital; not only for the teachers, but a great benefit to students.

School Professional Development

Throughout the academic year, Redwood Middle School has back-to-back minimum days as well as certificated work & staff development days. While your student(s) either attend school for a half day or get a day off, the Redwood Staff is hard at work to better serve and teach our students. Below you will find a brief description of how our(my) time is spent on these days.

Grade Level Team

As part of the 7th Grade BLUE Team, I am honored to be working closely with:

  • Dr. Susan Germeraad (SCIENCE)
  • Baeta Blaho (MATH)
  • Holly Nakasima (FRENCH & TUTORIAL)
  • Gail McCoy (MATH)
  • Kathy Lasko (SPANISH)
  • Debbie Skelton (RESOURCE)
  • Cassandra Wakefield (SDC)
  • Angela Deans (COUNSELOR)
  • Pat Burnham (COUNSELOR)
  • Linda Rocha (COUNSELOR)
  • Amy Duren, Kristi Kirwan, and Pam Demertzis (CORE)

We meet 2-3 times monthly where our primary focus is how to improve teaching and learning for our team members (teachers, students, and their parents) by estalbishing goals for the year. As a team we all share the same rules and expectations, as our students will come to know. Together we will do at least one cross-curricular activity (with a focus on math), plan recognition assemblies, and have a joint team plan to make homeroom consistent for all of our students.

Physical Education Department

As a Physical Education Department I am pleased to be working with:

  • Laura Hansen (6TH GRADE BLUE)
  • Eljas Long (6TH GRADE WHITE)
  • Sheri Hiraki (7TH GRADE WHITE)
  • Matt Grenier (8TH GRADE WHITE)
  • Jennifer Vandenberg (8TH GRADE BLUE)

As a department staff, we also meet 1-2 times monthly to assess material needs, plan content related to professional development and specific grade levels, and continuely evaluate department & grade level goals for the year.
