What is Fitnessgram Testing?
The State Board of Education designated the FITNESSGRAM® as the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for students in California public schools. The FITNESSGRAM® is a comprehensive, health-related physical fitness battery developed by the Cooper Institute. The primary goal of the FITNESSGRAM® is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity.
What specific tests are adminstrated?
For 7th grade the focus is on 5 areas with 8 tests covered throughout them:
- Body Composition: Body Mass Index (height & weight)
- Aerobic Capacity: Mile Run
- Muscular Strength & Endurance: Push-Ups & Curl-Ups (Crunches)
- Flexibility: Sit and Reach & Trunk Lift
- Agility: Shuttle Run

When are students tested?
Students are tested twice a year; once in fall as a pre-test to see where they stand and the actual fitness testing sent into the state in early May.
How will this information help my student(s)?
Each student will receive a printout that contains their personal results from both the pre & post-fitnessgram testing.
Further Information & Links
A new Senate Bill #78 has been put into action as of July 1, 2007 that will apply to those students beginning their 9th grade year after said date. It states that all students are required, in order to be eligible to graduate from high school, to take two years of physical education, unless the District grants an exemption. Effective July 1, 2007, the two-year exemption will be available to a student if the student “passes” the physical
performance test administered in the 9th grade. Thereafter, a student who “passes” the test in grades 10 to 12 may be granted a two-year exemption. Please check out the the California Department of Education: Physical Fitness Testing (PFT) for more information regarding this change and fitness testing in general.
